Media Director

Position Profile

The Media Director works across agency groups and client accounts to shape media strategies, build media relationships, generate ideas, and deliver agency-wide, measurable, media results. The Media Director will own and elevate the competency by playing an ongoing role on client accounts and providing ad-hoc media strategy support. They will have a deep knowledge of traditional and new media outlets and journalists and will leverage that knowledge to garner results and coverage for our clients, and act as a resource for the agency’s own media opportunities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Daily pitching for agency clients – this is a major part of the role
  • Take initiative to develop relationships with top tier journalists via phone, and face-to-face contact, to strengthen interest in Stern as the leading resource for business thought leadership insight.
  • Provide an ongoing, consistently high level of strategic media results from pitching efforts
  • Actively develop a strong understanding of clients’ industries, businesses and strategic goals and generate creative media tactics, new story ideas, and media opportunities to ensure client program success and alignment with clients’ strategic goals
  • Readily shift gears and develop new story angles and media opportunities when a pitch is not generating coverage; identify and foresee issues with client stories; actively seek solutions
  • Provide media training to client spokespersons, as needed
  • Secure large-scale, feature stories for clients
  • Demonstrate a well-developed knowledge of relevant media, particularly among top tier press
  • Qualify the value and relevance of inbound media inquiries
  • Keep the agency abreast of trends/patterns and shifts in the news cycle, strategically applying observations to client programs
  • Take initiative to develop relationships with top tier journalists via phone, and face-to-face contact, to strengthen interest in Stern as the leading resource for business thought leadership insight.
  • Actively develop and update agency templates for media briefing documents, client media reports, news releases, pitch notes and other written materials
  • When required, serve as a key client contact for writing activities, developing media briefing documents, news releases, bylined articles, bios, op-eds, and other press materials; proofing, editing, and providing strategic direction as necessary
  • Contribute to the development of strategic client plans and new business proposals
  • Demonstrate excellence as a leader in a collaborative environment: apply strong relationship building skills with both colleagues and clients; build trust and strong cross-functional relationships
  • Assist in the professional development and coaching of agency team members regarding effective media relations tactics, and help evaluate their progress

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 8-10 years of demonstrated experience
  • Working knowledge of AP Style
  • Demonstrated excellence in oral and written business communication skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Internet; understanding of key social media platforms — including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube – for the purpose of media relations
  • Familiarity with Cision, PR Newswire, Businesswire, Profnet, HARO and related media relations tools/platforms
  • Established relationships with journalists at publications relevant to B2B media outreach
