Java Kick Brand Launch

Launched in the summer of 2016, Java Kick is an energy drink alternative for coffee lovers combining the beloved taste of coffee with the refreshing “kick” of cola. As a breath of fresh air emerging in the energy drink market, Java Kick needed to stand out from a bevy of established competitors.

The beverage creators sought Stern Strategy Group’s expertise to develop a compelling brand identity and a defined, aggressive marketing communications strategy to launch and grow interest in and sales of Java Kick. Recognizing the opportunity for Java Kick to make a “splash,” as well as the challenges associated with entering the rapidly growing sports and energy drink market and the robust coffee market in the U.S., Stern’s phased approach included developing the product’s look and feel (logo and visual brand guidelines), what it should “say” (tagline, positioning and product story), and where and how it should be communicated (website including an online retail space, social media and content marketing).  The Java Kick frenzy has only just begun as our team continues to create customer engagement through a strong presence on a variety of social media channels.

Planning & Execution

The Stern team kicked off brainstorming creative ideas and messaging to capture the brand’s tone and enthuse Java Kick’s target audience. Following this workshop, we jumped into ideation on everything from logos and color palettes to the architecture and navigation of the website. Through our iterative design process, we captured Java Kick’s creative vision while ensuring website and SEO best practices were put into place for maximum reach and usability.

Working with a brand from the ground up is exciting and rewarding, and it offers plenty of opportunities to explore new technologies and methods. Throughout the development process, Java Kick and Stern Strategy Group collaborated closely to align on the best solutions to the questions we faced – both in the realm of e-commerce as well as the product’s overall business strategy.


Through our collaborative problem solving and an eye for design and user interaction (and our love of coffee!), we created an effective platform for giving voice to Java Kick’s new brand. The website quickly experienced nearly 1,000 sessions, with most traffic coming from social media channels such as Java Kick’s Facebook page, which reached nearly 3,000 post engagements in less than two months of the brand launch. As Java Kick continues to grow and expand from orders on the website and shelf space in retail locations, bars and restaurants, our team looks for opportunities to promote the drink to new markets through even more engagement on social media, all while staying focused thanks to our fully stocked fridge.
