The Importance of Humanizing Technology (and Business)

From blockchain, augmented and virtual reality to artificial intelligence and the internet of things, humans and technology are getting entangled like never before. In this enlightening presentation, behavioral scientist Dr. Lalin Anik outlines how the insatiable human appetite for better, faster, and cheaper technology leads individuals and companies to voraciously search for the next relevant technology to learn, integrate and implement. She points out that, ironically, if you want to be relevant, you need to understand humans better and learn about their underlying needs, wants, hidden desires, and (un)conscious behaviors. At the same time, you need to humanize technology to align it with the human needs it is supposed to serve. Anik teaches audiences to ask questions relevant to the human-technology and human-machine interactions that supersede queries and welcome managerial and societal insights that inspire growth such as:

  • What insights underlie support for vs. reactance to the technologies you use in your organization? How can you humanize these technologies to nudge your customers or employees to make better decisions, and change their behaviors in your favor?
  • What attributes of technology can you leverage to increase consumer trust and engagement in artificial intelligence in the private and public sectors?

The Science of Behavior Change

How can organizations across sectors apply the science of behavior change for competitive advantage? In this revealing presentation, behavioral scientist Dr. Lalin Anik leverages insights from behavioral economics, psychology, and sociology to tackle behavior change issues. She covers industry-specific examples of how individuals (e.g., consumers, employees) deviate from the “optimal” (e.g., cognitive biases), and why and how these deviations matter. Anik then unpacks the implications and applications of these limitations for specific situations depending on client needs ranging from decisions in banking, insurance and healthcare to retirement, fundraising and public policy. Through interactive discussions and workshops, Anik shifts focus from self to others and offers creative ways to incentivize behaviors towards decisions and behaviors that benefit both the individual as well as the society at large. The overarching goal is to improve people’s and organizations’ ability to design interventions and policies that improve individual and societal well-being.

Making the Business Case for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

In this timely presentation, Dr. Lalin Anik combines her work as a behavioral scientist with her personal passion as a vocal champion for DEI issues to drive individual and organizational change. Anik believes that for business leaders, deeply understanding and addressing DEI challenges is not just critical for moral and ethical reasons, it’s also a business imperative. Specifically, she works closely with current and future Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) to be one of the critical driving forces of the DEI agenda in their organizations. Anik helps leaders dig deep and identify novel tools, paradigms, and strategies to evaluate the ethicality of their ideas and navigate complicated managerial decisions. Throughout their work, CMOs learn to effectively leverage DEI to make impact externally (in the marketplace), internally (within the organization) and overall feel more confident and resourceful in their decisions and actions. Anik’s ultimate goal is for the CMOs of tomorrow to establish a competitive advantage by combining their expertise in communicating a vision for what’s possible with their fundamental role in advancing their organization’s DEI efforts.

Creating a Culture of Vulnerability and Generosity

How can individuals and organizations open themselves up to vulnerability to benefit themselves and others? In this eye-opening presentation, behavioral scientist Dr. Lalin Anik reveals how the energy of empathy and science of behavior change in modern business transcends traditional business perspectives to solve the intrinsic human problems concerning companies, organizations, and societies. By dissecting the tensions between what we do for ourselves and for others, Anik demonstrates the greater overall reward – for individual and institution alike – of vulnerability to increase deeper connection. Anik offers concrete and practical ways for individuals to open up, which requires a shift from the immediate joy of self-centered thinking to the satisfaction of other-focused behaviors. She champions empathy, the value of vulnerability and to be bold enough to drill into our susceptibilities, rather than waste precious energy shielding them.
